Overvloed... Abundance...

This study also was inspired by a picture on Paint My Photo. The light on the colourful round apples appealed to me. But this one needed a different approach from the previous painting of the lilacs. I followed the reference rather literally and it turned out a rather dark painting. At the same time I am not very pleased about it, I'd like to find a way to paint this in a more watercolour-like style. So be prepared, more apples to come!

Groetjes, Marleen.

  3. Why is it as artists we are not always happy with our own paintings...I get that problem all the time. All I can say from my point of view is that your painting is gorgeous - and as for the darks, yes absolutely they are needed because it shows up the lights so well.

  4. Just let the apples come...love them. Do you really think these are too dark?? I am with Ann, think they are gorgeous!

  5. These look every inch the watercolour to me. Without those delicious darks the lights and glow of the delicate colours would be lost. Looking forward to seeing the next ones.

Thank Ann! In real the painting is even darker. I think the subject is more suitable for oils or acrylics. I have to think about another way to paint this. I agree it needs the darks.

Thanks Jane! Anyway, apples are a great subject to practise! :)

  8. Thank you Lisa! I appreciate your comment, I see your point and I'm glad it looks like a watercolour to you.

Merci Lydie! I know you are right. Maybe it is just that I usually don't work this dark.

  9. Oh nee he? Nog meer appels? Nee hoor grapje.

  11. Wow, a whole bowl of apples! This couldn't have been easy to paint... I like the darker colours because they make the light falling on the apples look lighter. But do paint more apples, Judy, your apples are always so good!

  17. I actually really like the darks because the darker the darks, the lighter the lights appear, so it has a much more dramatic effect. It's perfect, just as it it! :0)

  18. Thank you Azra! It is a wonderful reference photo.

Thank you Sandra! I know what you mean, the lights and darks make the painting. And darks, especially in the background, are my biggest problem. So this painting was a good exercise! But I'd like to make it more my own in some way.

    Thank you Cora!

  29. Gorgeous! So beautiful! I recently painted an apple in watercolour and I think I let it become too opaque since they can be very dark. You've kept the transparency perfectly here!
    Happy Painting.

  35. Erg mooi geworden.
