Even geen engeltjes, maar voor de afwisseling een bekend onderwerp. Een appel en een peer. Grootte: 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inch). Nog twee little gems voor het project.

5 years of blogging...

Vandaag bestaat mijn blog 5 jaar. 

En hoewel ik nog niet helemaal beter ben van een hardnekkige zomergriep, heb ik alleen maar goed nieuws te melden.

Allereerst, mijn lathyrus schilderij is verkocht. De afbeelding is gebruikt voor een rouwkaart en zij wilden het originele schilderij kopen. Leuk, hè?

Ook had ik een opdracht voor een horoscoop voor een pasgeboren meisje. Ik had dat al jaren niet meer gedaan, en ik vond het heerlijk om mijn kennis op dat gebied weer op te frissen.

En niet in de laatste plaats, mijn luidruchtige buurman is verhuisd, yeah! Nu hoop ik dat mijn broodnodige rust, en mijn zin in schilderen, snel weer zullen terugkeren. 

Geniet ondertussen van mijn 'verdwijnende' peren.

Today is my 5 year blog anniversary.

And although I am still recovering from a nasty summer flu, I have only good news to share.

First of all, my lathyrus painting has been sold. The image was used for a mourning card and they wanted to buy the original painting. How is that?

I also had a commission for a horoscope for a new born baby girl. I had not done that for years, and I enjoyed brushing up my knowledge in that area.

And last but not least, my noisy neighbour has moved, yeah! Now I hope my much needed peace of mind, and my joy in painting, will return soon. 

In the meantime, enjoy my 'disappearing' pears!

Pear 2...

Deze waterverfschets kostte niet meer dan 10 minuten, en ik ben blij dat ik hier ben gestopt en niet verder ben gegaan. Vooral van een afstandje is het een heel sterk beeld van een peer, ik was er verbaasd over. Ben wel benieuwd wat jullie vinden.

This watercolour sketch did not take more than 10 minutes, and I am glad I stopped here and did not add more paint. Especially from a distance it is a very strong image of a pear, it surprised me. I would love to know what you think.

Hieronder weer een kleurenstaal van de kleuren die ik heb gebruikt.

Ik heb gele oker herontdekt. Ik had deze kleur al zo lang niet gebruikt sinds de tijd dat ik nog landschappen schilderde, dat de tube bijna niet meer open ging. De combinatie oker met turquoise geeft een prachtige groene kleur.

I rediscovered yellow ochre. I had not used this colour for a long time since my landscape painting days, the tube almost would not open. Combined with turquoise it makes a beautiful green.

Both Irina and Pat asked me to make a video recently. My first thought was: have you seen what I threw away in the past week?! :) Well, a video I cannot do, but I can do a step by step photo series. You know I am absolutely no expert nor a teacher, but I can share what I have learned.

I used the same reference photo of the pears in my previous post, it is Challenge nr. 1 of Paint and Draw Together.

I made a quick drawing and started painting the pears and most of the background yellow, careful to leave the highlights white.

While that was still wet....

....I added sapgreen.... and vermillion red.

When the red threatened to take over the whole pear.... oops...

.... I used paper towel to remove the excess and soften the edges. Tip: try not to go back in again with the brush, but control the paint by tilting the paper.

I also added more yellow to both pears, making use of the nice property of yellow (and also clean water) to push other colours away.

Since it was all very wet....

....I then waited till the whole painting dried. When totally dry I carefully erased most of the pencil lines.

Then I added ultramarine blue, and softened edges here and there with a damp brush.

Then I added shadows and the last finishing touches....

and tadaaaaah.....
